Kent State Assignment

Centuori, Jeanine. The Residual Landscape of Kent State, May 4th, 1970. Landscape Journal. 1999. The article
talks about how the memorial at Kent State will serve as a site for students to see the government

corruption back in the 60's and 70's. It also goes through the events of that tragic day and gives you a vision

of what it was like to be on the Kent State campus on May 4th, 1970.

I thought the video that was shown in class was very interesting and made me think about a lot of things such as the world we live in now and how people don't protest now like they did back then. I thought it was very informative and I would love to see the rest of that video.

Can you think of a time when you have felt restricted in seeking information or expressing your views or ideas? Did you back up your opinion w/ facts?

In the 12th grade we had a research project to do. My research project was on the blood diamonds in Sierra Leone. My teacher only allowed us to use one online source and six books. I felt I was restricted in seeking information because even though you can get a lot of information out of books, online sources are very helpful and are topic specific. The books I found had like one or two chapters that were relevant to my topic. I told my teacher that only being able to use one online source was ridiculous and she reconsidered and eventually let us have four online sources.

The most influential book I have ever read and how it changed my thinking

I have read many books in my lifetime so for me there is more than one influential book. With that being said I will cut this post into two books with the first being Rant by Chuck Palahniuk. This book was one of the most influential books to me because it showed me that there is not really a line you can't cross when writing. Chuck Palahniuk is one of my favorite authors, along with Stephen King and James Patterson. Palahniuk doesn't hold back anything in Rant and this thought me that if you are good at writing creatively don't hold back anything. Much of my writing style comes from Palahniuk. The next book would be Fences by August Wilson. This "book" was more like a play but I read this play in around 2 hours. I couldn't put it down. This was influential to me because it got me into script writing, it didn't really change my thinking though.

Libraries Lost

Okay let me start off by saying Fred White's opinions are a little over the top. He makes libraries sound like the greatest thing in the world and he say's that online resources lead "you farther and farther from your original subject instead of shedding new light on it". I disagree with that. For me online resources help me out a lot. When I am trying to find books in a library for a particular assignment it sometimes get frustrating not knowing where to start looking. However I do agree that when looking through stacks of books in a library you sometimes find a book that you were not necessarily looking for but you found interesting. I think that storing books in metal crates and having "robotic arms" retrieve those books for you is an interesting system. It is a system for the 21st century and I believe it will make it a lot easier to find a specific book you are looking for. I am not saying that every library should inherit this new system, but I am not saying they shouldn't either.
